By Alfred Galbraith

We all know that the most effective foods for our diets are lean meats, whole grains and healthy fats. These are the foods that give us protein and energy. They keep our bodies healthy nutritionally but don't stuff us full of empty calories that will later need to be burned off at the gym. Did you realize though that a few of the diet foods you've been consuming may have been hindering your ability to lose weight? They might be even adding unhealthy calories to your body! Here are a number of the foods that may be undermining your diet attempts.

You aren't really helped by Sports Drinks. You've probably been thinking that the sports drink is the best way to help your system feel much better after a workout. Most doctors will tell you, though, that if your exercise routine isn't going to go over ninety minutes then you ought to be fine just by drinking water. Sports drinks could completely challenge your diet program because they are filled to the brim with sugar, empty calories and artificial colors and flavors. Try having some chocolate milk as an alternative. Your body employs the sugar in the chocolate for muscle repair and everyone knows how good milk is for you.

Skip the protein shakes. Lots of folks think that having a protein shake is a good way to curb cravings between meals. When you are eating an normally healthy diet, however, a protein shake just sends you into protein overdose. No matter what other people think, protein is not kept in the muscles, it is stored in your body as fat. This means that if you have already ingested too much protein that day, your body will merely store what it doesn't need in your fat cells and that doesn't help you lose weight or inches of your waist line at all.

Pre-packaged deli meat isn't as good for you as you may think. You may possibly think that a sandwich made from whole wheat bread and pre-packaged lean deli meat makes for a good lunch. The real truth is that pre-packaged deli meat has a large amount of preservatives and will provide you with about a third of your advised sodium intake for the day. This might be particularly tricky if you are prone to heart disease. Instead of purchasing the pre-packaged material, you should instead use home cooked poultry or freshly sliced meat from your grocery store's deli counter. Sure these types of selections are more costly but they are much healthier for you in the long run.

There are all kinds of things that we assume will help us lose weight: eating a whole wheat bagel in the morning, for example is actually a lot worse for you than a bowl of oatmeal with some cinnamon sprinkled into it for flavor. Ask your physician which things are the most effective to eat and then follow the directions you are given. If you are careful about precisely what you ingest and treat your body well, losing weight should not be that big of an issue for you!
